Are the Raiders Tom Brady’s Mystery “Motherf*cker” Team?

With the slowness of the pro football offseason in full effect, NFL social media needed something to speculate on to close out the month of June.

As he so often does with passes on the field, Tom Brady came through with a hot topic for discussion during an appearance on HBO’s The Shop. Appearing on the show, Brady ripped into a mystery team that expressed interest in signing him as a free agent in 2020 but backed off at the end, paving the way for him to sign with the Bucs and win the Super Bowl.

“There was a story in free agency: one of the teams was interested and then all of a sudden they weren’t interested at the very end. I was sitting there thinking, ‘You’re sticking with that motherfucker. Are you serious?’” Brady said. “When I look back, I’m thinking ‘There’s no fucking way I would’ve went to that team.’ But they said they didn’t want me! And know what that means! I know what that feels like! And I’m going to fuck you up because of that.”

So who was Brady talking about?

Some believe it was the 49ers, who opted to stick with Jimmy Garoppolo. Others think it was the Bears, who went with a combination of Nick Foles and Mitch Trubisky. And there are those that believe it was the Titans and that the QB whom Brady is denigrating is Ryan Tannehill.

Over at ProFootballTalk, there is a sense that the team Brady was talking about was the Las Vegas Raiders, thanks to input from “multiple people with deep connections to the NFL’s matrix,” which would make Derek Carr the unnamed MFer.

“As both sources explained it, the Raiders dropped out late in the process. As one source explained it, the Raiders thought Brady’s requests for extra things was over the top,” per PFT. “Brady’s comments have now been nationally televised, and repeatedly discussed. Whatever the truth may be, some people in the league believe it was the Raiders.”

If it was the Raiders, Brady made good on his promise: he passed for 369 yards and four touchdowns in a 45-20 blowout of Las Vegas in Week 7.
