One of the best statistical players in MLB history is hoping his links to performance-enhancing drugs won’t prevent him from being elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.

During an interview with TMZ Sports, Alex Rodriguez, a three-time American League MVP, said he was praying the PEDs in his past wouldn’t keep him out of Cooperstown in the future.

It is a distinct possibility that could happen as the 14-time All-Star was suspended for the entire 2014 season for violating MLB’s policy on PEDs.

“There’s rules, and you have to follow the rules. I made those mistakes, and at the end of the day I have to live by those mistakes,” he said. “Whether I get in or not – and let’s be clear, I want to get in, I hope I get in, I pray I get in – if I don’t, I think I have a bigger opportunity yet again.”

The opportunity he’s referring to there is the chance to educate a younger generation about what not to do in order to avoid having the same issues Rodriguez has had thanks to his choices.

“And the platform of my mistakes, the good the bad and the ugly, has allowed me to have a loud voice to the next generation, to say when in doubt, just look at my career,” he said. “The other message is, maybe I’m not a Hall of Fame player, but I get a chance to be a Hall of Fame dad, a Hall of Fame friend.”
