Currently serving 30 to 60 years for sexually abusing 10 boys, disgraced ex-Penn State football coach Jerry Sandusky will appear in court on Friday with the hope that his sentence will be reduced.

Sandusky, 75, is receiving the resentencing hearing because it was determined mandatory minimum sentencing guidelines were been wrongly applied when he was originally convicted of 45 counts of child sexual abuse involving 10 boys in 2012.

His legal team previously requested that Sandusky receive a new trial because he had ineffective legal counsel during his original trial, but that request was denied and the Pennsylvania Supreme Court declined to review the lower court’s decision.

At the resentencing on Friday, the judge does have the option to impose the same sentence Sandusky received in 2012 as long as it is not based on a minimum sentencing requirement.

The former coach was able to abuse the boys through his youth charity, The Second Mile, and members of the Penn State football program were aware something improper was going on but did not report on Sandusky.

Penn State has paid more than $109 million to settle Sandusky abuse claims after an independent investigator found there was a “total disregard by the most senior leaders at Penn State for the safety and welfare of Sandusky’s child victims.”

Sandusky has always maintained his innocence in the matter, though allegations continue to be made against him, including some earlier this month.
