The placekicker the New England Patriots took in the fifth round of the NFL draft in April has taken a step in the right direction.

Justin Rohrwasser became a topic of conversation after the draft when it was revealed he had a tattoo of the logo of the far-right militia group the Three Percenters on his left arm. (The Southern Poverty Law Center defines the Three Percenters as part of the anti-government militia movement.)

Rohrwasser, a native of upstate New York who made 85.7 percent of his kicks during his senior season at Marshall University, has had that tattoo removed, according to TMZ.

The 23-year-old pledged to get the tattoo removed after the draft, though he claimed at the time that he got it when he was 18 because he thought it was a patriotic tribute to the armed forces.

“As soon as I saw what it was linked to, it was exactly that time I knew I had to get it totally taken off my body,” Rohrwasser said in April. “I said cover it up, but I want to get it removed from my body. It’s shameful that I had it on there ignorantly. I’m sorry for all my [friends] and family that have to defend me. Putting them in that compromising position is one of the biggest regrets I’ll ever have. To them, I’m sorry. I’m going to learn from this. I’m going to take ownership of it. This is not who I am. No matter what, that’s not who I am. Hopefully, you will all find that out.”

Controversy aside, Rohrwasser has some big cleats to fill as he was drafted to replace Stephen Gostkowski, who had been the Patriots’ kicker since 2006 before landing on injured reserve last season and subsequently being released.
