The New England Patriots were not able to win their sixth Lombardi trophy in 2017. But ESPN writes that the path back shouldn’t be difficult. They put together a list of how the Patriots could get back to the Super Bowl, as well as other offseason moves to improve each AFC East team. First of all, the Pats need to pick up the fifth-year option for Malcolm Brown. He has been a three-year starter for New England and serves as a valuable part of their rotation on the interior. The Pats might not necessarily think about signing Brown to an extension this offseason, but ESPN writes keeping him around for the 2019 season should be a no-brainer. The team also needs to clear out cap space. Cutting four guys — Martellus Bennett, Dwayne Allen, Alan Branch, and David Harris — would free up just under $17 million and push the team to $34 million in free space. ESPN writes that the team also has to extend Brandin Cooks because they will likely change their offense after Rob Gronkowski retires, which could be as early as this offseason. The Pats also need to extend Trey Flowers and Shaq Mason, and last but not least, they need to address left tackle.
