Packers Hire Titans Offensive Coordinator Matt LaFleur as New Head Coach

LaFleur has previously worked under offensive innovators Sean McVay and Kyle Shanahan.

The Green Bay Packers are hiring Titans offensive coordinator Matt LaFleur to replace Mike McCarthy as their next head coach.

LaFleur, who ran the offense for the Tennesee Titans last season, spent four years as the quarterbacks coach of the Washington Redskins from 2010-13 and had the same job with the Atlanta Falcons from 2015-16.

Prior to last season, he spent 2017 as the offensive coordinator with the Los Angeles Rams. During his time with Rams, LaFleur, worked under Sean McVay and during his time with the Falcons he worked under Kyle Shanahan.

McVay and Shanahan are viewed as two of the best young offensive minds in the NFL and the Packers are likely hoping LaFleur soaked up some of their knowledge while he was working alongside his two previous head coaches.

That said, the hiring is somewhat surprising as the Titans finished just 25th in total yards and 29th in passing yards per game last season. LaFleur’s expected to keep defensive coordinator Mike Pettine on board to run Green Bay’s D.

Though the team was not great in recent years, McCarthy does leave big shoes for LaFleur to fill as he went 135-85-2 (including playoffs) during his 13-season tenure in Green Bay.

He was fired with four games left in his 13th season as Green Bay’s coach and the Packers went on to finish 6-9-1.
