After playing 18 games for an organization that gave him $27 million guaranteed at signing last year, running back Le’Veon Bell is a free agent.

In a move that solidifies their shot at landing the No. 1 pick in the draft and the right to select Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence, the New York Jets cut the 28-year-old after they were unable to trade the former star RB.

“After having conversations with Le’Veon and his agent and exploring potential trade options over the past couple of days, we have made the decision to release Le’Veon,” said NY general manager Joe Douglas. “The Jets organization appreciates Le’Veon’s efforts during his time here and we know he worked hard to make significant contributions to this team. We believe this decision is in the best interests of both parties and wish him future success.”

The Jets’ decision to release Bell leaves behind $15 million of dead cap space for 2020 and $4 million in 2021, according to Spotrac.

Bell was given a four-year, $52.5 million contract last year after sitting out the 2018 season instead of playing under the franchise tag. Former Jets general manager Mike Maccagnan was fired two months after signing Bell, and embattled New York coach Adam Gase was reportedly never a fan of bringing in the former Steeler.

With Bell out of town, Gase will have even less firepower to work with on an offensive unit that has only scored 75 points this season, by far the worst in the NFL. At 0-5 on the season, the Jets may simply be tanking in 2020 at this point.

Bell has 19 carries for 74 yards this season. He will be available to sign with another team after 4 p.m. on Wednesday, and it seems very likely the former Pro Bowler will latch on with another club.
