The college football season began with playoff hopes for a number of teams, but the first weekend of games started to separate the optimists from the realists.
No. 12 Notre Dame came out of its first game Saturday night as a winner – defeating No. 14 Michigan and shutting up naysayers. Facing just four or five ranked teams during the regular season, this could be a great year for fans of the Fighting Irish.
No. 10 Auburn has been eclipsed in the Southeastern Conference by powerhouses Alabama and Georgia, but drew attention to its own title ambitions with an impressive 21-16 win against No. 6 Washington. Conversely, the Huskies endured a setback, although prognosticators still see the squad as talented enough to win the Pac-12 title.
The biggest winner of the weekend, though, might be Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray, who steamrolled Florida Atlantic. Replacing Baker Mayfield is a tough job, but USA Today speculates that Murray has a shot at a Heisman Trophy of his own.
