Originally slated to be played at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas on the last day of January, the NFL’s 2021 Pro Bowl game has been canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Instead of hosting the game in 2021, Las Vegas will instead have the Pro Bowl in 2022, according to the NFL. Vegas is also set to host the NFL draft in 2022.
Though there will be no game, players will still be voted into the 2021 Pro Bowl and the NFL plans to “reimagine” the event. “The league will work closely with the NFLPA and other partners, to create a variety of engaging activities to replace the Pro Bowl game this season,” according to the NFL. “This virtual recognition of the season’s finest players will provide fans the opportunity to celebrate the accomplishments of their favorite stars.”
This is the first time since the 1949 season that the NFL hasn’t held some form of a postseason All-Star game, according to ESPN.
By eliminating the game, the NFL frees up the week before the Super Bowl and creates more flexibility within the league year should games need to be made up at the end of the season due to COVID-19-related cancellations.
In related news, the Super Bowl that was slated to be played in New Orleans in 2024 has been pushed to 2025 due to a conflict with Mardi Gras.
As a result, Super Bowl LVIII will be awarded to a new host city like Las Vegas.
