On Tuesday night in Baltimore, Ravens wide receiver Dez Bryant was looking forward to getting on the field and competing against his old team.

Instead, Bryant was yanked off the field during warm-ups due to a positive COVID-19 test prior to Baltimore’s game with the Dallas Cowboys.

Despite Bryant — who interacted with several of his former teammates before the game —  testing positive, the NFL allowed the two teams to play, and the Ravens (7-5) cruised to a 34-17 win over the Cowboys (3-9).

As the game was in the process of kicking off, the Ravens said Bryant was “scratched from tonight’s game due to an illness” on social media, but the 32-year-old wideout provided more details via his Twitter account.

The above question is a good one, but the NFL decided to go ahead with the game after performing emergency contact tracing with interviews and tracking-device data related to Bryant’s test, according to The Washington Post. The league “was prepared to pull any players or other personnel if they had been identified as high-risk close contacts” but deemed no one was a high-risk close contact, The Post reports.

“You’ve got to trust the science on it, the way that they go about doing it,” Ravens coach John Harbaugh said in a postgame news conference. “That’s what the league does. They put a team into place. I’ve learned the [past] couple weeks that team is very extensive. That’s their job. So that’s what they determined.”

The decision to play the game came on the heels of an outbreak of COVID-19 on the Ravens causing 23 players to be placed on the reserve/COVID-19 list over the past few weeks, the reason Baltimore and Dallas were playing on a Tuesday.
