Joe Buck Admits to Drinking Tequila With Troy Aikman in Booth While Calling NFL Games on Fox

Buck also used to drink the biggest beer he could find during MLB playoff games

In addition to an addiction to hair plugs that nearly cost him his career, Fox sportscaster Joe Buck apparently has some other addictive vices: beer and tequila.

Speaking with Colin Cowherd on his new podcast The Volume, Buck revealed he used to have a production assistant run and get the biggest beer the stadium sold in the first inning of every postseason baseball game he was working. “I had it sitting there, and I would sip it from time to time to remind myself to relax and have fun,” Buck told Cowherd. “I’m just doing a game.”

Based on these calls (which are from October, when MLB’s playoffs take place), we kind of believe him.

Buck went on to say that he modified that practice a little bit in order to suit his partner’s taste when he began teaming up with color man Troy Aikman to call football games on Sundays during the NFL season.

“I brought that over to football,” Buck said. “But because Troy is a man of finer tastes, beer somehow became tequila, Grand Marnier and grapefruit juice. We haven’t done it in a long time now, but it was good for a stretch, and I feel like it’s a good mental trigger to just chill and remind yourself that you’re not refueling a F-16 in mid-flight. You’re doing a sporting event, and if you treat it like anything other than that you’re doing yourself a disservice.”

It seems like the tequila is a better choice for boozing in the booth, as the on-air chemistry Buck has with Aikman seems a bit more developed than his rapport with John Smoltz, with whom the 51-year-old calls baseball games.

Buck is no Jim Brockmire, a character on a show bearing his name about a debauched baseball play-by-play man with a drinking problem and a checkered past, but perhaps the face of Fox Sports did learn a thing or two while guest-starring on the IFC show.
