Dylan Thomas, a 16-year-old linebacker with Pike County High School, has died after suffering an injury during a football game. The high school junior underwent surgeries to relieve brain swelling, but ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

Thomas, who was the “heart and soul” of the team’s defense, had just earned a spot in the starting lineup this season. During Friday’s night game, he came off the field and to the sideline, according to head coach, Brad Webber. Something appeared to be wrong with Thomas’s leg, but he was talking, but then his left leg and left arm went numb and he “pretty much fell off the bench,” reports The Washington Post.

It has yet to be determined exactly when and how Thomas was injured. Pike County High School held a vigil for the young player, and schools in the area put out requests to have their students wear Pike’s colors in honor of Thomas.
