Update: The Miami Heat have suspended Waiters for 10 games without pay as a result of the incident, which they called a “very scary situation.” “There have been a number of instances this season in which Dion has engaged in conduct detrimental to the team,” their statement reads.

As ESPN reports, Miami Heat guard Dion Waiters suffered a panic attack on the team’s charter flight to Los Angeles Thursday night (Nov. 7) after consuming a THC-infused edible.

Waiters received medical attention when the plane landed in Los Angeles, and he was listed as out due to illness for Friday’s game against the Lakers and was not at the Staples Center. He had also missed Thursday’s 124-108 victory over the Phoenix Suns due to a stomach ache, and according to ESPN, he took an edible he was unfamiliar with hoping it would relieve his symptoms.

The guard reportedly flew back to Miami with the team on Saturday. League rules prohibit the use of THC, and the Heat declined to comment about Waiters’ reported panic attack or edible consumption.

It’s been a rough start to the season for Waiters, who has yet to play in a game and has only been listed as active for two of the Heat’s nine games so far. He missed time during the preseason for “personal reasons,” and he was suspended by the team for the season opener for “conduct detrimental to the team” after “a number of unacceptable incidents.” He has yet to dress and sit on the bench.
