Flyers fans can rest easy: their beloved mascot Gritty has been cleared of any wrongdoing after an investigation into one man’s claim that furry, orange creature (or rather, the person inside him) punched his 13-year-old son from behind after posing for a photo with him.
“That investigation, which has been completed and is no longer active, determined that the actions of the individual portraying the Flyers’ mascot did not constitute physical assault as alleged,” a Philadelphia police statement read.
Chris Greenwell claimed last month that back in November, Gritty punched his son at a meet-and-greet event for season-ticket holders at the Wells Fargo Center. “Gritty was about eight feet away from my son, got out of the chair and lunged at him and hit him in the back,” he claimed.
However, the investigation found that not to be the case, and Gritty remains a free man — or, uh, whatever he is.
“We are pleased that the Philadelphia Police Department concluded there was no merit to the alleged claim,” the Flyers said in a statement. “The police department’s statement confirms our thorough internal investigation that found no evidence of the described actions ever having taken place.”
