After spending a year moonlighting for ESPN while pitching his final season for the New York Yankees, retired ace CC Sabathia is set to become a free agent on the sports media market.
Sabathia, who worked on a limited basis in both TV and radio for ESPN, is expected to draw interest from national networks like TBS and Fox but could also receive an offer from a regional sports network like the Yankees’ YES Network. Re-signing with ESPN is also a possibility for the 39-year-old, according to Front Office Sports.
The 2009 World Series winner, who appeared on ESPN shows like Get Up!, First Take and Baseball Tonight, currently has podcast called R2C2 on the “Uninterrupted” network.
Sabathia’s agent, Mark Lepselter, called the hefty lefty’s sports media future an “open canvas.”
“CC is looking at a variety of different opportunities. CC certainly appreciated the relationship that he had with ESPN this past season,” Lepselter told FOS. “It allowed him to start the transition into the broadcasting world. We’re just looking at a variety of different things with ESPN – and other outlets – and seeing where it all goes.”
Sabathia’s career ended with a whimper as he suffered a partially dislocated shoulder in a relief appearance during New York’s loss in Game 4 of the ALCS and was subsequently removed the Yankees postseason roster.
A six-time All-Star, Sabathia led the league in wins three times and won the American League Cy Young award in 2007.
Though he isn’t eligible yet, Sabathia is likely headed to Cooperstown one day.
With more than 3,000 strikeouts and 251 wins under his belt, Sabathia is tied for 47th on MLB’s all-time wins list with Hall of Famer Bob Gibson. Of the 48 players with 250 wins or more, only nine have not been inducted into the Hall of Fame.
