Though he never met George Floyd and has no discernible connection to his family, Floyd Mayweather will foot the bill for the murdered man’s funeral.
The former boxing champion offered to pay for Floyd’s funeral and memorial services, which will be held in his hometown of Houston on June 9, and the late 46-year-old’s family has accepted his offer. Mayweather will also pay for services in Minnesota and North Carolina.
“He’ll probably get mad at me for saying that, but yes, he is definitely paying for the funeral,” Leonard Ellerbe, the CEO of Mayweather Promotions, told ESPN. “Floyd has done these kind of things over the last 20 years.”
Mayweather, who lives in Las Vegas, has not met the Floyd family but has been in touch with them personally, according to Ellerbe.
In another sports connection, Floyd was also close friends with former NBA player Stephen Jackson, and the two men called each other “twin.” Since Floyd was murdered by former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, Jackson has been advocating for justice for his friend.
“Right now, I’m 10 toes down, and my only purpose is getting justice and being with these people and trying to be a good leader,” Jackson told Marc Spears of ESPN’s The Undefeated on Monday. “Like, I’m honest with you: I did not expect to have the role and to have so many people waiting to see what I have to say and what’s the next move. Like, I didn’t ask to be in this position, but I’m embracing it. I’m embracing it.”
