Fired for going on an anti-immigrant rant during which he used the phrase “you people,” hockey broadcasting legend Don Cherry will not apologize to get his job back.
Given an opportunity before being let go by Rogers Sportsnet to walk back his comments, 85-year-old Don Cherry declined and was fired.
Now, more than a week later, Cherry clarified on his new podcast, The Grapevine, that he was willing to explain the comment but not apologize. Cherry also said Sportsnet “made it impossible” for him to address the comments that led to his firing.
Thought it will start as a podcast, The Grapevine — which draws its name from a show Cherry appeared on from 1982-93 — could morph into a televised show with cameras and sponsors.
“The new project will feature Don talking about the NHL and hockey and whatever he wants without any censorship,” according to The Toronto Sun. “If he wants to talk about poppies, he can do it without being fired. If he wants to talk about the troops or cops or firefighters or honour the fallen, no one can tell him to keep his nose out of it. Mostly the plan is to talk hockey. And he won’t have just seven minutes to get it all out.”
