A May incident that started with an alleged assault of an Uber driver and ended with a Taylor Swift-inspired Twitter rant has led Lenny Dykstra to be indicted on a pair of drug charges as well as on a charge of making a terroristic threat.
Dykstra was indicted for possession of cocaine and methamphetamine as well as the terror charge by a grand jury in Union County, New Jersey. All of the charges are third-degree crimes.
The charges stem from an encounter Dykstra had with an Uber driver that he says led to the driver attempting to kidnap him on the morning of May 23 after the three-time All-Star asked to change the trip’s destination.
The driver told a different story to police and said Dykstra held a gun to his head and threatened him. No weapon was found, but the drugs turned up during a police search.
“Dykstra then placed a black pill bag with an object [the driver] believed to be a gun to his head and said ‘take me to Staten Island or I’ll blow your (expletive) head off,” according to a police report about the incident.
The former World Series winner could face up to 10 years in prison if convicted, in part because he already has a federal conviction for fraud and another prior conviction.
Dykstra and his legal team continue to maintain his innocence. “A grand jury will indict a ham sandwich,” his attorney Matthew Blit told TMZ Sports. “The evidence in this case overwhelmingly confirms Lenny is innocent.”
