Already in danger of ceding snaps to backup quarterback Jalen Hurts, Philadelphia QB Carson Wentz had another rough game on Monday Night Football as the Eagles dropped to 3-7-1 courtesy of a 23-17 loss to the Seattle Seahawks.
Wentz completed 25-of-45 passes for 215 yards, two touchdowns — one in garbage time on a Hail Mary — and one brutal interception in the loss.
The 27-year-old quarterback now leads the league in interceptions (15), sacks taken (46) and off-target incompletions (95).
As if those numbers aren’t bad enough, Wentz has seen his passer rating fall to 73.4, well under the league average and also below the 98.3 rating he accrued in his last three seasons combined.
Per NFL Research, the drop-off in passer rating is actually historically bad as Wentz is now the only quarterback under the age of 30 to have his passer rating drop 24 or more points below his combined rating from the previous three seasons.
Wentz is also just the sixth quarterback in NFL history to have his passer rating fall off that dramatically and four of the five quarterbacks who previously experienced such a drop-off (Y.A. Tittle, Peyton Manning, Joe Theismann and Brett Favre) retired the following season.
With the loss to the Seahawks, the Eagles fell a half-game behind the Giants and Washington for first place in the woeful NFC East and, given Wentz has a 16-15 touchdown-to-interception this season (compared to an 81-21 ratio for the rest of his career), Philadelphia may turn to Hurts earlier than expected to see what’s got.
