Eagles Fine DeSean Jackson, Expect Commitment to Improvement After Anti-Semitic Posts
The team also expects a "commitment" to improving after Jackson apologized
DeSean Jackson’s self-inflicted bad week ,has now gotten financially worse. Due to the wide receiver sharing several posts with anti-Semitic messages, the Philadelphia Eagles fined him an undisclosed amount, according to a statement released on Friday.
In addition to announcing the fine, the statement also said that the team expects a commitment from Jackson to support his apology with actions:
Today we have penalized DeSean for conduct detrimental to the team. He accepted these consequences and apologized. In our many conversations with him, it has also been made clear that this is only the beginning. We have discussed a concrete plan for how we and he can heal moving forward. He understands that in order to remain on the team, he must also commit to supporting his words with actions.
Though the statement does not detail what the “concrete plan” looks like, it does appear that the team is taking his remaining on the roster seriously. According to an ESPN source, Jackson will not only pay the fine, but also donate “a significant amount” to Jewish community efforts.
Prior to the statement and the fine, Jackson met with Eagles president Jeffrey Lurie and general manager Howie Roseman, both of whom are Jewish, and the ESPN report says that Lurie specifically was extremely disappointed in Jackson’s posts.
Elsewhere in the league, New England Patriots Julian Edelman, who is Jewish, said he reached out to Jackson this week to invite him to go on a tour of the Holocaust Museum. He also said that the two spoke and are committed to learning from each other about the problems facing their communities:
DeSean and I spoke for awhile last night. We're making plans to use our experiences to educate one another and grow together. Stay tuned.
