“Brittany and I are committing $5,000,000 to the State of Louisiana in 2020,” the 41-year-old quarterback wrote. “The priority now is helping our communities get through this tough time. After considerable research and conversations with local organizations, we will be mobilizing our partnerships with Second Harvest Food Bank, Ochsner Health Systems, Walk-Ons, Jimmy Johns, Smalls Sliders and Waitr to prepare and deliver over 10,000 meals per day throughout Louisiana for as long as it takes to children on meal programs, seniors, and families in need. Let’s all do our part, maintain hope, and get through this together.”

The donation comes at an important time, as Louisiana is experiencing the fastest growth in new Covid-19 cases in the world according to one study. The situation is particularly dire in New Orleans, with 827 confirmed coronavirus cases as of Wednesday night. With hospitals overwhelmed and critical safety gear in short supply, that number, and the death toll, is only expected to rise.

Governor John Bel Edwards, who said that the current trajectory of case growth in Louisiana was similar to what has happened in Spain and Italy, thanked the Brees family for their gift.

It is worth noting that Drew and Brittany Brees are owners or investors in the restaurant chains and food delivery service that were mentioned in the statement, according to ESPN. Nonetheless, the donation will help put meals on the tables of Americans at a time when there’s a massive need for that.
