Cost of a court-level seat at a New York Knicks game? About $830.
Price of an imported beer at Madison Square Garden? $12.50.
What you’ll pay for the soul of a Knicks fan? $3,450.
After becoming disgruntled with his favorite team, lifelong Knicks fan and MSG employee Evan Perlmutter put his NBA fandom allegiance up for sale on eBay with an auction called “Infuriated New York Knicks fan has had enough, selling my fanhood.”
James Riedel, a 23-year-old Los Angeles Lakers fan with a YouTube Channel in need of content, won the auction for $3,450.
Under the terms of the auction, Perlmutter must attend two games LA games (one home, one away), buy some Lakers jerseys, and put down a $500 bet that the Lakers will surpass their over/under win total.
“I’m off to one of the most decorated [franchises] in all of sports, sunny winters, with a destination free agents actually want to go to, Hollywood … and it’s time to Strive For Greatness,” Perlmutter wrote in an email to ESPN.
The Knicks issued a statement of their own: “We’re sure our millions of loyal Knicks fans won’t mind losing this attention-grabbing gentleman. We remain focused on the upcoming season — with a hard-working team that is proud to represent New York and its dedicated fans.”
