The city of Oakland’s federal antitrust lawsuit against the Raiders and the NFL could pave the way for NFL football to return to San Diego – for a season.
The lawsuit against the club and the league seeks repayment for lost revenue and asks for damages that will help pay off the approximately $80 million in debt from renovations on the Oakland Coliseum.
Since the team won’t have a stadium to play in Las Vegas until 2020 and the team has maintained they would not return to Oakland if the city filed a lawsuit, the Raiders will need a new home for the 2019 season.
San Diego, which has an NFL-ready stadium that is vacant following the departure of the Chargers to Los Angeles, could be a potential landing spot.
Locations like San Antonio, Reno, Santa Clara, and Fresno have also been discussed as temporary landing spots for the Silver and Black.
At the NFL owners meetings in Dallas Raiders owner Mark Davis called the lawsuit against his team “meritless and malicious.”
“My feeling is we’re 3-10 and we’re still relevant,” Davis said. “It’s a legal issue, and I’ll let the attorneys make any further comment.”
