Last September against the Minnesota Vikings, the Buffalo Bills were 17-point underdogs in quarterback Josh Allen’s first road start.
This weekend as the home team, they’ll be on the opposite end of the spectrum as the Bills see the same spread against the Miami Dolphins except they are favored.
The last time the Bills were favored by 17 points was in 1992 when Jim Kelly was playing quarterback and Buffalo was playing in, but not winning, Super Bowls.
It’s a big spread, but the winless Dolphins have routinely been double-digit underdogs this season and the Bills (4-1) are one of the better opponents that they have faced.
Regardless, Buffalo head coach Sean McDermott isn’t taking them lightly.
“If you’re focused on that, then you’re focused on the wrong things,” McDermott said, via ESPN.com. “We’ve got to focus on where we’re at, where we need to improve and make sure we’re ready to go on Sunday. [Miami] is a good football team.”
It’s nice for McDermott to say that, but it’s simply not true.
Averaging fewer than 60 rushing yards and 200 passing yards per game on offense, the Dolphins are on pace to score 134 points this season, which would be the fewest by any team in a 16-game season in the 100-year history of the NFL.
That may change a bit as veteran Ryan Fitzpatrick will start at quarterback this week in place of second-year QB Josh Rosen but, based on how Miami has played up to this point, odds are it won’t.
