The San Francisco 49ers managed to get to .500 with a 31-13 win over the New York Jets in Week 2, but they lost a lot more with a plethora of injuries.
In the first half of the game, starters Nick Bosa, Jimmy Garoppolo, Solomon Thomas and Raheem Mostert all suffered injuries that kept them out for the second half of San Francisco’s victory.
Bosa was carted off the field in the first half after engaging with Jets tight end Trevon Wesco. His left leg buckled after he attempted to disengage and pursue running back Frank Gore. After the game, 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said that Bosa likely tore his ACL.
Garoppolo suffered a severe right ankle sprain in the first quarter when he was sacked by Jets defensive tackle Quinnen Williams. Running back Mostert suffered a knee injury. Defensive lineman Thomas is also feared to have torn his left ACL.
The list of the wounded on the 49ers roster grew exponentially with the 49ers already missing tight end George Kittle, cornerback Richard Sherman, wide receiver Deebo Samuel and defensive end Dee Ford. It will be a tough task for the 49ers to repeat as NFC champs with this growing list of injuries this early in the season.
The 49ers weren’t the only team to suffer devastating injuries. The New York Giants lost Pro Bowl running back Saquon Barkley to a knee injury in the first half of their 17-13 loss to the Atlanta Falcons. The Giants fear he has a torn ACL.
He was tackled by Bears cornerback Kyle Fuller and landed awkwardly out of bounds. There probably won’t be any new updates on Barkley’s injury until he undergoes further testing on Monday.
Outside of injuries, one notable player was Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins who stood out for all of the wrong reasons. Cousins was terrible, throwing three interceptions and posting a 15.9 quarterback passer rating in Minnesota’s 28-11 loss against the Indianapolis Colts. At the end of the third quarter, Cousins’ passer rating was exactly 0.0.
