Another pair of the Nike “Moon Shoes” that fetched an out-of-this-world price at auction over the summer are coming up for auction.
Obtained by Nike collector Lindy Darrell, the pair of Moon Shoes that is crossing the block courtesy of Goldin Auctions was handmade for runners at the 1972 Olympic Trials.
Designed by Nike co-founder and legendary Oregon University track coach Bill Bowerman, the shoes got their name because the mark their waffle soles make on the ground resembles the track that was left on the moon by astronauts in 1969.
The pair which was sold over the summer went to collector Miles Spencer Nadal for $437,500, a new record for a pair of sneakers. In addition to being rare — it’s believed fewer than 15 pairs of the Moon Shoes were ever made — Nadal’s pair fetched such an exorbitant price because it is the only one that exists in unworn condition.
“There may only be a handful left in existence and these offered shoes are one of those very rare pairs,” Goldin says of its shoes. “This pair has no tagging as it was custom-made and is an approximate size between 8 and 9.”
Crossing the block in a lot that also includes an original Oregon running singlet, bidding for the available pair of Moon Shoes starts at $100,000.
