As the COVID-19 vaccine rollout has steadily increased in recent weeks, society has quickly become divided into two different types of people: the vaccinated and the unvaccinated. The good news is, they can have sex with each other.
The CDC recently released a new set of rules for what vaccinated folks can and cannot do safely. The organization has usually stayed on the quiet side when it comes to laying down explicit guidelines for safe sex during the pandemic, leaving most of us to make our own rules and take our own risks in the pursuit of pandemic hookups, or simply settle into a long, indefinite dry spell. This time is no different, but while the CDC has once again declined to offer any specific suggestions, we now understand enough about the virus to translate COVID-19 guidelines for other aspects of life to our sex lives.
According to infectious disease specialist Anne Liu, because COVID-19 is a respiratory illness, guidelines for sex are really no different than for any other activity involving close contact between people, Vice reported. The new guidelines state that vaccinated people can safely spend time together indoors, so the same applies to sex among vaccinated folks.
But what about vaccinated-on-unvaccinated action? According to Liu, vaxed and unvaxed lovers aren’t destined for tragedy. Per the new CDC guidelines, fully vaccinated people should feel free to mix with low-risk unvaccinated folks in small groups, as long as the group doesn’t mix unvaccinated people from different households. Once again, these guidelines can reasonably be extended to sex. “If the person who’s unvaccinated is at low risk for severe disease and is also at low risk for exposure,” then sex is “probably a pretty low-risk situation,” Liu told Vice.
Essentially, once you have the full vaccine, you can safely hang out (or have sex) with whoever you want. “If it’s safe to be around someone and breathe the same air, then there’s no additional risk from sex above and beyond in terms of COVID,” said Liu.
So while we may be a society divided between the vaccinated and the unvaccinated, we can take comfort in the knowledge that the vaxed and the unvaxed can still come together for sex. Perhaps we aren’t so divided after all.
