In a recent essay for Vanity Fair, Caroline Rose Giuliani, the daughter of former New York City mayor Rudy Giuliani, opened up about her experience as a “unicorn,” a term in consensually non-monogamous (CNM) communities used to describe a person who has sex with a couple. As Giuliani explains, this third partner “is known as a ‘unicorn’ because of our mythical rarity.”

In the essay, titled “A Unicorn’s Tale: Three-Way Sex With Couples Has Made Me a Better Person,” Giuliani details how she discovered CNM after ending a long-term, monogamous relationship, explaining how sleeping with couples became a source of sexual gratification as well as emotional fulfillment and self-discovery.

“Finding the strength to explore these more complicated, passionate aspects of my personality became the key to harnessing my voice and creative spark, which in turn helped me better cope with depression, anxiety, and the lingering cognitive effects of adolescent anorexia,” she writes.

Among the CNM and kink-friendly users on alternative dating app Feeld, Giuliani says she discovered a community of like-minded individuals, united by a “commitment to embracing one’s own nonconformity, the celebration of individualism and sexuality without shame.”

As a unicorn joining other couples, Giuliani writes that she found herself in a uniquely vulnerable position, one that opened the door to a new kind of intimacy and connection. “When a couple invites me into their bed, I not only get welcomed into the midst of their preexisting connection, but also get to forge a new one with them based on their trust that I will respect the boundaries of their relationship,” she writes. “This is a vulnerable position all around: for the couple in opening their connection to a newcomer, and for the unicorn in entering a power dynamic where they are the only one without an established teammate.”

Ultimately, Giuliani vouches for the intense personal discovery and mental wellbeing that sexual exploration can open up, explaining that while kink is often thought of as “dirty,” and “taboo,” exploring sexuality in non-traditional ways can be a deeply intimate experience, allowing one to form profound connections with others and themselves. Thanks to these experiences, “I know now that I am empathetic, radically open-minded, profoundly adventurous, and fiercely committed to telling stories that reduce the stigma surrounding sexuality and mental health — including this one, right now.”
