What is the 2018 Song of the Summer?
Esquire tunes into the debate between Cardi B, Childish Gambino and Drake tunes.
Drake might be beating Michael Jackson’s historic records when it comes to records but that doesn’t make him the undisputed king of the summer. Cardi B has proved to be an unstoppable force, especially with her unprecedented debut album and a dominant summer, writes Esquire.
The Charters, Childish Gambino and some surprising newcomers all released powerhouse albums and songs this summer as well. Esquire is asking for help picking the song of the summer. Here are some of the contenders:
Drake: “In My Feelings”
After XXXTentacion was killed in mid-June, his song “Sad!” was launched to the top of the Hot 100, breaking records.
This list of Donald Glover’s talent goes on and on: Music, movies, TV shows, unmade cartoons, writing. “This is America” and the accompanying video is a surreal critique of race and violence in this country, writes Esquire.
Through their song “Apes**t,” Beyoncé and Jay-Z analyze cultural institutions that fail to include black artists. The Carters and black dancers are placed in front of white artwork in the Louvre in Paris for the music video. The song also calls out the Grammys.
Cardi B tapped into Latin trap artists J Balvin and Bad Bunny for “I like it,” which successfully combines salsa and ’60s boogaloo with modern trap.
