Surveillance footage of the outside of Jeffrey Epstein’s cell at the Metropolitan Correctional Center during his unsuccessful suicide attempt has mysteriously disappeared, prosecutors announced Wednesday (Dec. 18).

Epstein — who later successfully killed himself while behind bars — made the first attempt on July 23 while sharing a cell with Nick Tartaglione, a former cop who faces the death penalty for allegedly committing a quadruple murder. Tartaglione claimed to have saved Epstein after he tried to hang himself, while the billionaire sex criminal claimed that Taraglione attacked him.

Tartaglione’s attorneys filed a request for the footage two days after the July 23 attempt, hoping to use it as evidence of his character to help him avoid the death penalty. On Wednesday they revealed in court that no one knows where the footage of the incident is.

“It is on the surface troubling,” his attorney Bruce Barket said. “I’ll reserve judgement until I’ve found out more details.”

Epstein’s body was discovered on Aug. 10. Two correctional officers have been charged with neglecting their duties and falsifying records for the night of his death. Judge Kenneth Karas has asked the government to investigate what happened to the footage from  July 23.
