One of the most influential supermodel photographers in the world is dead at the age of 74.

Peter Lindbergh, whole work helped usher in the supermodel era of the 1990s by photographing supermodels like Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington and Linda Evangelista, passed away at his studio in Paris.

Lindbergh’s death was shared by his official Instagram account but no cause of death was announced.

“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Peter Lindbergh on September 3rd 2019, at the age of 74,” according to the account’s post. “He is survived by his wife Petra, his first wife Astrid, his four sons Benjamin, Jérémy, Simon, Joseph and seven grandchildren. He leaves a big void.”

In addition to shooting models for campaigns for luxury brands like Dior, Giorgio Armani, Prada, Donna Karan, Calvin Klein and Lancôme, Lindbergh also regularly took photographs which appeared on the covers of glossy magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar.

“His ability to see real beauty in people, and the world, was ceaseless, and will live on through the images he created,” Edward Enninful, the editor of British Voguewrote on the publication’s website.

A fan of working in black and white, Lindbergh even used that color combination when photographing the celebrated Pirelli tire company calendar in 2016.

In that calendar, he presented subjects like Helen Mirren, Nicole Kidman and Charlotte Rampling without makeup.

“I hate retouching, I hate makeup,” he told British Vogue this year. “I always say, ‘Take the makeup off!’ ” He added: “The number of beautiful women who have asked me to lengthen their legs or move their eyes further apart, you would not believe. It’s a culture of madness.”
