Two correctional officers responsible for Jeffrey Epstein at the time of his death will reportedly face criminal charges for falsifying prison records this week.
That’s according to two sources “familiar with the matter” but unauthorized to speak on it who spoke with the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity. The guards are reportedly suspected of fabricating log entries to make it appear as though they checked on Epstein every half-hour, as required.
Both guards were working overtime due to staffing shortages at the time of Epstein’s death and are suspected of failing to check on him as scheduled. The guards have been placed on administrative leave while the FBI investigates the circumstances surrounding the death, which the city’s medical examiner ruled a suicide.
Federal prosecutors offered the guards a plea bargain, which they declined. The expected charges will be the first in connection with Epstein’s death.
While the August 10 death was ruled a suicide, speculation surrounding the incident continues to swirl. Last month, a forensic pathologist hired by Epstein’s family reported that an autopsy suggested the disgraced financier may have died by homicide.
“I stand firmly behind our determination of the cause and manner of death in this case,” said New York chief medical examiner, Dr. Barbara Sampson, who ruled Epstein’s August death a suicide.
