An unidentified good Samaritan stepped in to pay for hotel rooms for 70 homeless people who were exposed to the elements in Chicago during the record cold this past week.
The generous offer came after the Chicago Fire Department confiscated nearly 100 propane tanks given out to keep the homeless warm when temperatures sank to -22 degrees Fahrenheit on Wednesday, the Associated Press reported. The department acted after one of the donated tanks exploded.
Salvation Army spokeswoman Jacqueline Rachev said her group’s response was to move the homeless people to a warming center. But then the city called Rachev back, however, to inform her of the anonymous Good Samaritan’s gesture.
The do-gooder’s identity remains unknown, Rachev told the AP. The only known information was that the hotel was on Chicago’s South Side.
