As the co-creator, writer, and star of CW’s Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Rachel Bloom literally sings, dances, and acts her way through one of the most unflinching, open-hearted depictions of mental illness on television. As the final season of the hit show comes together, Bloom sat down with GQ to talk about what’s next.
GQ calls Bloom “one of the most innovative and multi-faceted comedic performers of her generation, and a talent worth following across any medium she chooses to tackle.” From the very beginning, Bloom pitched the show as a four-season arc. When they first created the show, Bloom and co-creator Aline Brosh McKenna asked themselves: “What are the cycles of being a quote-unquote ‘crazy ex’? Falling in love with someone, being obsessed with them, getting over them, and the path to recovery.” And their vision has remained consistent. Bloom says that the ending image for her show’s finale will be the same one she pitched five years ago.
During its run, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend has debuted more than 100 original songs. Fans can look forward to more of them, including a possible 1960s boy band homage or maybe a Donna Lynee Champlin tap dance number in the upcoming season.
As for what’s next for the star if she had unlimited money? A period musical piece.
