“Ant-Man and the Wasp” Opens With $76 Million Debut

The latest Marvel sequel, starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, won the weekend.

Ant-Man and the Wasp dominated the box office competition this weekend when it opened with $76 million from 4,206 North American locations. The film, starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, beat out The First Purge, The Incredibles 2 and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. The movie’s initial weekend take is significantly ahead of the original Ant-Man, which debuted with $57 million in 2015, according to Variety. 

Overseas, Ant-Man and the Wasp collected $85 million, bringing its worldwide opening to $161 million. The Marvel Cinematic Universe has produced 20 total movies, which have now brought in $17 billion globally, reports Variety. All 20 movies have opened No. 1 at the box office. Ant-Man and the Wasp currently has an 86 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

“We are really thrilled about the results,” Cathleen Taff, Disney’s head of domestic distribution, said. “We continue to be amazed by what Kevin Feige and the team do with these films.”

The Incredibles 2 earned $29 million and stole the No. 2 spot from Jurassic World this weekend, which earned $28.6 million. The First Purge made $17 million from 3,031 theaters in its debut.
