The world of celebrities and Scientology has long been a complex one, and it’s grown more complicated in recent years. Peripheral to this works is one Beck Hansen, who had previously identified as a member of the religion. A 2005 essay in PopMatters pondered the impact of Beck’s beliefs on his music. “Being a critically successful Scientologist might make Beck even more idiosyncratic,” wrote Jesse Jarnow at the time. “Isn’t that why we value Beck to begin with?”

New reports indicate that Beck’s time as a Scientologist has reached its end. At The Hollywood Reporter,  Seth Abramovitch reports that the critically acclaimed musician has broken with the sometimes-controversial church. “In an interview with The Sydney Morning Herald promoting his new record Hyperspace, Beck clarified that he is not a church member nor does he ascribe to Scientology beliefs,” Abramovitch writes.

Beck’s father, David Campbell, has been a Scientologist for decades; until earlier this year, Beck was also married to Marissa Ribisi, who was also a longtime member of the church. The couple divorced in February.

It’s a sharp turnaround for someone who had previously staunchly defended Scientology in numerous interviews. Abramovitch’s article cites numerous examples of Beck doing so; then again, religious belief is something that waxes and wanes over time.

“I think there’s a misconception that I am a Scientologist,” he told the Herald. “I’m not a Scientologist. I don’t have any connection or affiliation with it.” The specifics of Beck’s quote suggest something deeper may be going on — or it might just the next phase in the life of someone known for unexpected decisions.
