Madonna has been responsible for her share of cringe-inducing social media posts in the past, but this is a whole new level: the pop star has deleted a video from her Instagram after the social media platform flagged it for spreading misinformation about COVID-19.
The video is of Dr. Stella Immanuel — a Houston-based doctor whose controversial views include the notion that many ailments are caused by “demon sperm” from having sex with demons in dreams — speaking at a rally in Washington, D.C. held by America’s Frontline Doctors, which has ties to the far-right Tea Party Patriots. In the video, Immanuel says masks are unnecessary and claims she has successfully treated COVID-19 patients with the malaria drug hydroxychloroquine.

Madonna captioned the video on her Instagram by writing “The truth will set us all Free!” and calling Immanuel “my hero.” She also falsely claimed that a COVID-19 vaccine has been available for months but “people in power who stand to make money from this long drawn out search for a vaccine” don’t want to make it available. “They would rather let fear control them and let the rich get richer and the poor and sick get sicker,” she added.
This is all, of course, categorically untrue, and before the pop star deleted the post, it was blurred out by Instagram and covered with a disclaimer that read, “False Information. Reviewed by independent fact-checkers.”
