Bruce Springsteen wasn’t the only guest to sing on last night’s Saturday Night Live; host Timothée Chalamet also got to croon an ode to a very small horse, in one of the night’s weirdest (and best) sketches. But Springsteen and the E Street Band made the most of their time on the show, playing a pair of songs from their critically acclaimed album Letter To You.
One of these was the bittersweet “I’ll See You In My Dreams.” Lynne Margolis’s review of Letter to You for American Songwriter dubbed the song “a lullaby-like benediction,” while Sam Sodomsky noted at Pitchfork that the song consciously echoes “Born to Run” musically, while covering very different thematic ground.
On Saturday Night Live, the band was in solid form, offering a heartfelt rendition of the song.
It’s a song that allows everyone in the band to shine; the live performance also finds Springsteen looking particularly moved. Listening closely to the lyrics, about absent loved ones, it’s hard not to think of the year to date — something Springsteen has a particular talent for.
