What happens to the new work of a filmmaker who’s spent the last few years being accused of awful things and criticized for artistic “laziness”? The filmmaker in this case is Woody Allen, who is currently suing Amazon after the company parted ways with the filmmaker in the midst of a four-picture deal — in part due to accusations that Allen molested his adopted daughter. This has also led to numerous actors who have worked with Allen to, understandably, distance themselves from the Manhattan and Annie Hall director.

This leaves what would have been the second of Allen’s films with Amazon, a comedy called A Rainy Day In New York, in a state of limbo. The film’s cast is terrific, and includes Timothée Chalamet (who is donating his salary to charity), Elle Fanning, Selena Gomez, Rebecca Hall and Diego Luna. And now, Vanity Fair has reported that Allen has taken the bold move of releasing the film’s trailer himself, via Facebook.

Based on the trailer, the film centers around a young couple (Chalamet and Fanning) whose trip to New York takes several strange turns involving a troubled filmmaker, an awkward family gathering, stylized dialogue, and some questionable gender politics. The scenes shown from the film do look visually fantastic, however; given the presence of revered cinematographer Vittorio Storaro, who’s worked on everything from The Conformist to Apocalypse Now to Ishtar, that’s no surprise.

If the trailer looks great to you and you live in France, you’re in luck — A Rainy Day in New York opens there on September 18. If you’re looking to see A Rainy Day In New York in New York itself, however, you might be waiting a little longer.
