One of the more unexpected aspects of pandemic-era popular culture has been the increasing popularity of drive-in movie theaters. It’s not that strange when you think about it: people do enjoy going to the movies, and drive-ins provide a risk-free way of seeing both first-run movies and old favorites on the big screen.

As it turn out, the United States isn’t the only country embracing drive-ins. And in the UK, a high-profile drive-in is coming to a storied location with a royal pedigree — literally. Queen Elizabeth’s home, the Sandringham Estate, is set to host a number of screenings beginning in late September.

As Alexandra Del Rosario writes in an article for Deadline, the screenings are a subset of a larger group of events held on the estate that are open to the public — including apple-picking and a Christmas fair.

Among the films being screened? Rocketman, Bohemian Rhapsody and 1917. Viewers can come via their cars, or can upgrade to various experiences, all in the confines of Sandringham Country Park. Which, it should be said, looks like an absolutely fantastic place to see a movie outdoors.

Deadline’s article also confirms something else enticing about the screenings: there will indeed be concessions available for sale, ranging from popcorn to alcohol. It doesn’t sound like a bad way to spend an autumn night or two.
