Yesterday, the Golden Globe nominations were announced, and they were extremely bad. In a year that saw a slew of excellent Black-led ensemble films, none were nominated in the Best Picture category, and Spike Lee’s highly lauded Da 5 Bloods failed to earn a single nomination in any category. On the TV side, Michaela Coel’s groundbreaking I May Destroy You was completely snubbed, while Netflix’s Emily in Paris — slammed by critics — earned two nods.
But today, the Screen Actors Guild announced the nominations for its annual awards, and fortunately, they’re much better. Coel is nominated for I May Destroy You, and four out of the five nominees for Outstanding Cast in a Motion Picture — the closest equivalent the SAG Awards, which are acting specific, have to a Best Picture — mostly consist of minority actors. Minari, which follows a Korean-American family and was relegated solely to the Globes’ Best Foreign Language Film category, earned a nod in that category as well as acting nominations for stars Steven Yeun and Youn Yuh-Jung. Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Da 5 Bloods, One Night in Miami and Judas and the Black Messiah all also earned recognition, and the late Chadwick Boseman made history as the first actor to be nominated for four SAG Awards in a single year. (Boseman is nominated for Best Actor for Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Best Supporting Actor for Da 5 Bloods and in the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture category for both films.)
