The work of Andy Warhol left a significant impact on the global art world, both in terms of its style and in terms of its influence. Even more broadly, Warhol could be said to have impacted how we think of celebrity itself, reinventing what pop culture could be. When Warhol has appeared on film, he’s been played by similarly impressive figures — including David Bowie in the 1996 film Basquiat.

The canon of cinematic Warhols is about to get a new member, according to a new report. At Consequence of Sound, Alex Young and Ben Kaye write that the next actor to play the iconic artist will be none other than Jared Leto. Leto announced the casting on his Instagram. As Young and Kaye note, Leto did not include any other specifics about the project.

In 2016, news reports broke that Leto was set to play Warhol in a film featuring a screenplay by Boardwalk Empire creator Terence Winter. Leto was listed as a co-producer on the project, along with Michael De Luca. De Luca’s credits include films like The Social Network and Captain Phillips; the film was set to be based on Victor Bockris’s acclaimed biography of the artist.

De Luca is now chairman of MGM’s film group, which has announced a number of high-profile projects this year. If the film Leto is alluding to is indeed a revival of the 2016 project, it would certainly fit the bill.
