Gwyneth Paltrow’s Latest “Health” Tip? Pull Energy Out of Your Butt.

“The human body has an energy field and we’re processing the world through it,” says John Amaral, a self-described “somatic energy practitioner” and Doctor of Chiropractic, in a preview for the new Netflix documentary series The Goop Lab, which is an extension of Gwyneth Paltrow’s wellness empire.

We’re not 100% sold on the whole energy field thing, but the human body does have a digestive system and we’re processing food through it, and Amaral seems to combine those two concepts in a viral Instagram video where he, uh, pulls energy out of Julianne Hough’s butt.

Don’t believe us? See for yourself:

Why is it of any consequence that a chiropractor is performing an exorcism on the hindquarters of a Dancing with the Stars and America’s Got Talent judge? Two reasons: First, as Jezebel pointed out, this demonstration took place in Davos, Switzerland, during the World Economic Forum, and as such is a look into the wellness interests of the one percent who have the potential to trickle down into mainstream society; second, this is yet another instance of Gwyneth Paltrow-approved health claims coming under scrutiny.

Goop is the company Paltrow built from a simple newsletter into what The New York Times has described as “the most controversial brand in the wellness industry.” Those controversies, some might remember, include selling rose quartz vaginal eggs with dubious health benefits — the company actually ended up settling a lawsuit concerning the eggs for $145K. Oh, and then there were the vagina candles.

Now we have a supposed “energy practitioner” with Paltrow’s blessing pressing his fingers into celebrity fannies at an event where world leaders are supposed to be discussing issues like climate change, and you’re about to hear a lot more about this as people start bingeing the Netflix series.

We’ll let the medical experts weigh in on the validity of this energy trend, and in the meantime, we’ll stick with our current gym routine, thanks.
