Universal Notifies Theaters That It’s Updating “Cats” With “Improved Visual Effects”

Cats opened on Friday (Dec. 20) to overwhelmingly negative reviews and questions about its overall horniness, and according to a new report by The Hollywood Reporter, director Tom Hooper is still scrambling to improve it. Universal reportedly notified thousands of theaters on Friday that they will be sending an updated version of the film with “some improved visual effects.”

Citing “insiders,” the publication reports that the move, which is unheard of for a finished movie that has already been released, is being made at Hooper’s request. The updated version of the movie will be available Sunday for exhibitors to download via a satellite server. Those who don’t have access to the server will be receive a hard drive with the new version by Tuesday.

The studio is reportedly asking theaters to replace the current print of the movie “as soon as possible.” Cats brought in just $2.6 million on its opening day Friday. It cost roughly $100 million to make, not including marketing.

The changes to the movie won’t affect its running time, according to Universal. The studio declined to comment further about the revisions to the film.
