HBO’s highly anticipated Game of Thrones prequel House of the Dragon is tentatively slated for a 2022 release, HBO president of programming Casey Bloys recently told Deadline.

Bloys stressed to the publication that it’s too early to give any more specifics beyond that, but he did reveal that writing on the project from George R.R. Martin and Ryan Condal has begun. The series, which will be written by Condal based on Martin’s Fire & Blood book, will take place 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and tells the story of House Targaryen.

There’s no word on the show’s cast just yet, but Condal and Miguel Sapochnik will serve as its showrunners, and they’ll executive produce along with Martin and Vince Gerardis.

House of the Dragon was one of four Game of Thrones spinoffs in the works at HBO, but the others are currently on hold, and Bloys said the network’s main focus is on the prequel.

“For me for right now, I think getting House of the Dragon on the air will be the number one priority,” he told Deadline. “There are no other blinking green lights or anything like that. Sometime down the road who knows, but there are no immediate plans. We are all focusing on House of the Dragon.”
