Twenty-four years after its end, The Far Side appears set for a surprising return.
A just-launched official site for Gary Larson’s often anthropomorphic, always surreal one-panel comic strip was recently updated with a new cartoon showing a man with a blowtorch thawing out various animals and human characters who populated the series. Underneath was the message “Uncommon, unreal, and (soon-to-be) unfrozen. A new online era of The Far Side is coming!”
As noted by the New York Times, The Far Side ran in newspapers from 1980-1995 and brought in an estimated $500 million in calendars, books, T-shirts and other associated media. Larson, who had a keen interest in biology that influenced much of his work, inspired the name of a species of chewing louse and the arrangement of spikes on stegosaurid dinosaurs.
Interestingly enough, the updated website has no actual archival strips, and Larson himself has previously asked fan sites to take down any Far Side material. Several newspapers currently print reruns of the strip, however.
