Tock of the Town: October 12th

The best timepieces of the week, from $187 to $1,450

October 12, 2018 9:00 am

Welcome to Tock of the Town, a biweekly guide to our favorite new timepieces for all styles and budgets.

What time is it? Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin both wore Omega Speedmasters during the Apollo 11 moon landing, a fact that The First Man (opening today) will certainly not ignore

Neil took this of me on our way to the moon. I look pretty confident showing off my @omegawatches. #Apollo11

Meanwhile, Bremont teamed up with Venom for a “dark and sombre” timepiece. And calling all rhinestone cowboys: Ralph Lauren now makes $24K “western” watches. Elsewhere, you can now buy a $50K stopwatch … though if you have that kind of scratch, maybe plunk down $17 to buy a NATO strap that helps in the fight against breast cancer while you’re at it.

Now, on to what’s making us tick this week …

On a budget (<$200): Décantheure
An automatic watch for … wine lovers? Let’s explain: With a twist of the crown, you can track the amount of time it takes to decant 30 different varieties of wine. Fun fact: The back is made from a transparent green Champagne bottle. ($187)

Affordable style (<$1,000): Luminox Atacama Field Automatic 1900
For a short time, you can grab 15% off a wide variety of these cool, water-resistant, Swiss-built watches, best known as the timepieces worn by Navy SEALs … but also for their illuminated tritium tubes, which give each ticker an illuminated face. ($749)

Just take all my money (>$1,000): Shinola Monster Automatic
The Detroit luxury goods purveyor just launched three new automatic dive watches inspired by the nearby Great Lakes: Huron, Superior and Michigan, to be exact. These themed tickers can hit depths of 1,000 feet and all feature a unidirectional rotating bezel and Super Luminova indices for maximum underwater visibility. Each Monster is powered by the Sellita SW200-1 automatic movement, which features 26 jewels and a 38-hour power reserve. We particularly like the Huron, which has an orange enamel dial and was supposedly inspired by the shoreline sunsets. ($1,250-$1,450)

See you in two weeks. Until then, enjoy this step back in “time”: it was 50 years ago this month when Led Zeppelin made its live debut (well, at least under the name Led Zeppelin). Here’s one of their earliest classics…
