Land Rover Just Threw Its Big-Ass Hat In the Driverless Car Ring

Make way!

At the risk of being tarred and feathered, I’m going to go out on a limb and say that I think Range Rover drivers are notoriously some of the worst on the road.

I can’t quite decide if it’s people who don’t know how to drive well behind the wheel of something too large to handle … or if the ride just tends to appeal to egocentric asshats. Maybe a bit of both.

Either way, I’m all for this announcement.

Because coming down the line fast, the company announced a self-driving Land Rover Range Rover Sport. The ride is stated to be capable of Level 4 autonomous driving, which translates into going anywhere in a “controlled environment,” but it will still require a human behind the wheel should the situation get sticky.

The newcomer will be able to pick up all the standard traffic cues from identifying traffic lights to navigating intersections and even roundabouts, so everyone in New Jersey can rejoice.

We can expect to see the handsome beast cruising around the U.K. as soon as the end of this year, which makes the Rover Sport a serious frontrunner in the self-drive game.

No information was released about whether or not the Level 4 Rover could off-road. But we figure most owners aren’t going any farther than the grocery store, anyway.
