In an announcement we’re told made the market for board shorts futures surge like Apple in the early 2000s, a groovy beach buggy that until now has called the UK home is coming stateside.
Originally designed for the British army in the 1950s, the early versions of the Moke (the name comes from the Brit slang for donkey) were based on the British Motor Corporation’s Mini and, at 10 feet long and less than 1,000 pounds, wasn’t all that much bigger.
The model was discontinued in the ‘90s so Mokes have been scarce, especially in the U.S., which is why a newly formed firm, Moke America, is planning to release its new electric model here.
With a range of 40 miles and a top speed of 25 mph, the street-legal e-Moke can charge in eight hours using regular household electricity and has enough space to take four bums to the beach.
Moke America is already taking orders for the $15,975 dune runners and plans to start delivering them in basic colors and camouflage this summer. Here’s where to order (50% deposit required).
