We know we’ve come to a crossroads when every dream car seems to be a Jaguar continuation model.
The latest comes on the heels of the Salon Retromobile in Paris, where Jaguar showed off the first new engineering prototype of its D-Type race car, a true automotive wonder best known for winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans three times between 1955 and ‘57.
Per usual, the folks at Jaguar Land Rover Classic Works in Warwickshire, UK, will faithfully lead the build-out of the famous six-cylinder-engined racer based on original drawings and records, limiting to production to only 25 units.
The move fits in a larger heritage shift that also saw the reproduction of the lightweight E-Type (“the most beautiful car ever made,” according to Enzo Ferrari) and the more recent XKSS continuation, which resurrected an unfinished production run of nine cars lost in a factory fire.
Add in full-blown restoration projects (see: here and here), and the JLR Classic workshop is certainly one to watch in the industry.
For its provenance and peculiar body styling, this D-Type series will certainly be a fun follow. Jaguar plans stick close to its back catalog, staying true to the original specs, from the monocoque cockpit to the unmistakable tail fin.
No word yet on pricing, but Jaguar Classic says to expect ‘em to go for over $1 million each. Seeing that an original 1955 D-Type sold for a mind-blowing $22 million in 2016, you could argue $1 million is a fair sticker.
